„And The Ocean Was Our Sky” by Patrick Ness

This is the story of Batsheba. In this Moby Dick inversed story written by Patrick Ness, humans are not the only ones who hunt the whales. The whales have also developed a way to strike back, answering to war with war. When, after finding the only survivor on a ship, and embarking on a hunt for the Devil himself, peace may be seen in the horizon for Batsheba and her crew – Captain Alexandra and the other two members. For if they succeed in killing the Devil, what use will it be to go on with the war?

I will give this book a 5-star rating, not because it is a Patrick Ness book(even though that is enough of a reason for me), but because this was so beautifully written it hurt. It was that kind of a book I never knew I needed but greeted it like a lost friend.
It spoke of war. It spoke of peace. It spoke of the devil and how sometimes we make our own demons and we only realize that when it’s too late. It was a tale of the whales, but it could easily be of the human beings.

I loved it and the year I have spent waiting for it to be released was rewarded.

Aceasta este povestea Batshebei. În această variantă inversată a lui Moby Dick, scrisă de Patrick Ness, oamenii nu sunt singurii care vânează balenele, căci şi balenele au dezvoltat o modalitate de a riposta, răspunzând la război cu război. Atunci când, după ce găsesc un singur supravieţuitor pe o corabie şi pornesc într-o vânătoare dupa Diavolul însuşi, pacea pare să se întrevadă la orizont pentru Batsheba şi echipajul ei – Căpitanul Alexandra şi ceilalţi doi membri. Pentru că, dacă reuşesc în incercarea lor de a ucide Diavolul, la ce bun va mai fi să continuie războiul?

Voi a acestei cărţi 5 stele, nu pentru faptul că este o carte scrisă de Patrick Ness (chiar dacă acesta este un motiv de ajuns pentru mine), ci pentru că a fost atât de frumos scrisă, încât a durut. A fost genul de carte de care nu am ştiut niciodată că am nevoie, dar pe care l-am întâmpinat ca pe un prieten pierdut. A vorbit despre rzboi. A vorbit despre pace. A vorbit despre diavol si despre cum, uneori ne facem proprii nostri demoni şi realizăm acest lucru abia când este prea târziu. A fost o poveste despre balene, dar ar fi putut la fel de bine să fie o poveste despre oameni.

Am iubit aceasta carte şi anul pe care l–am petrecut aşteptându-i apariţia a fost răsplătit.

„Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury

English:

A week before Halloween, a Carnival comes to Green Town, Illinois. It arrived in the middle of the night and changes the lives of the inhabitants of the town, especially the lives of Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, two 14 years old boys, who want to grow up already but are also scared about it. They are confused by growing adolescent bodies and the dark forces they have to face now tests them a great deal more. Even with the aid of Will’s father, a man who consideres himself too old already, will they be able to win against the horrors of the carnival?

I wish I had discovered this book when I was younger, at least 15 years old, because it would have helped me a great deal. Besides the creepy story of a dark Carnival arriving in the night, this was a book about growing up. And how it is okay to be scared of it and that you are not alone in it. And also how to create a bound with your father. All of those presented in the beautiful stile of Ray Bradbury’s writing.

Cu o saptămână înainte de Halloween, un Carnaval vine în Green Town, California. El ajunge în mijlocul nopţii şi schimbă pentru totdeauna vieţile locuitorilor oraşului, dar mai ales ale lui Will Halloway si Jim Nighshade, doi baieţi de 14 ani, care vor să creasca odată, dar sunt deasemenea înfricoşaţi de acest lucru. Sunt confuzi din cauza corpurilor lor de adolescenţi în creştere şi forţele întunecate pe care trebuie să le înfrunte îi testează şi mai mult. Chiar şi cu ajutorul tatălui lui Will, un bărbat care se consideră deja prea batran, vor putea oare ei sa învingă împotriva ororilor de la Carnaval?

Îmi doresc să fi descoperit această carte atunci când eram mai tânără, măcar când aveam 15 ani, căci m-ar fi putut ajuta mult. Pentru că, pe langa înfricoşătoarea poveste a unui carnaval întunecat care soseşte în miez de noapte, aceasta este o poveste despre a creşte, a te maturiza. Şi despre cum este ok să fii speriat de acest lucru şi despre faptul că nu eşti singur în asta. De asemenea, este şi despre cum să-ţi creezi o legătură cu tatăl tău. Toate acestea prezentate în superbul stil al lui Ray Bradbury.

This has been a strangelly prolific month for me, with my comic-book phase in the last 1 and 1/2 week of October actually dubbling the pile of read books. The comic books I have read were all in digital format.

Top Halloween reads/Topul lecturilor mele favorite de Halloween

Even though I don’t celebrate Halloween, I always like, around this time of the year, to dive into some atmospherical reads. To sit confortable in my bed, my blanket on my shoulders – to avoid the chills running down my spine -, coffee or hot chocolate or tea in my favourite mug, some snacks nearby and some spooky reads to devour.
Here are some of my favourite Halloween-appropiate reads.

#1 Something Wicked This Way Comes – Ray Bradbury
I have read this book for the first time in the month of August of this year. It was still summer when I’ve read it, but I would have sworn the air became chilly every time I dived into the unique and scary world Bradbury has created, with Demonic Carnivals arriving late in the night and dark characters I won’t be forgetting soon.
#2 The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
I love this book. Just like the first one on this list, this one also features a Circus arriving at night, but that’s where the simmilarities end. Because this book was like nothing I have read before.
Some might find it boring, because the author puts a lot of accent on the details of her world, but that’s exactly what I loved about this book. The fact that the scenery was so detailed, I could actually feel like I was there. It really felt like magic.
I have personally read it twice and never lost a chance to reccomend this tale to everyone who cared to listen to me.

#3 Coraline – Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman’s books will be featured a lot in this article, because he simply writes beautiful and dark spooky books, Coraline being one of them. It is one of the first titles that come into my mind when I think about Halloween. It is something about this spooky story of a girl who ended up in a different dimmension and found the Other Mother there that makes me pick it up every time October comes around.
Also, a fun fact: I gave this book to my brother and sister – they were 11 years old at that time, I think – and it was one of the two books they fought over because they both wanted to read it. Like really fought over, with pounches and everything. And if that does not convince you this book is worth reading, I don’t know what will.

#4 Harry Potter series – J. K. Rowling
This list would not have been complete without my favourite series of all times in it. I don’t think I have to explain why this book ended up here.

#5 Stardust – Neil Gaiman
This is my favourite Gaiman novel and it is also in my top favourite reads of all time. It is simmilar with a fairy tale, except for the fact that it is more than it seems. It features a boy who grows up to be a man, the star who falls in love with him and him with her and who is also one of the funniest characters I have ever encountered, some witches who want to eat her heart – you know, just the normal stuff – a hairy man, an unicorn and the list could go on.

#6 Carrie – Stephen King
This could not have been a Halloween reading list without having at least a Stephen King novel in it. This was the only one I have read – apart from „The Gunslinger”, which is a little too heavy to start with – and I thought it could fit perfectly. I mean, what could be more appropiate than a story of how telekinesis could go wrong?

#7 The Ocean At The End Of The Lane – Neil Gaiman
I wanted to wrap up this list with – you guessed – yet another Gaiman novel. This one is on the sadder part of things, with a grown man coming back to the house of his lonely childhood and rememorating what happened there, featuring parrallel universes, strange things happening – I mean, at some point, I was thinking „What’s going on?” – and a pond at the end of the lane which is actually an Ocean.

Chiar dacă nu sărbătoresc Halloween-ul, îmi place întotdeauna ca, în jurul acestei perioade a anului, să plonjez în câteva lecturi de atmosferă. Să stau confortabil în pat, pătura mea pe umeri – ca să evit fiorii ce-mi trec pe şira spinării –, cafea/ciocolată caldă/ceai în cana mea favorită, ceva gustări prin apropiere şi ceva lecturi înfricoşătoare pe care să le devorez.

Iată câteva dintre lecturile mele favorite de Halloween.

#1  Something Wicked This Way Comes – Ray Bradbury
Am citit această carte pentru întâia oară în luna August a acestui an. Era încă vară atunci când am citit-o, dar pot să jur că aerul devenea mai rece de fiecare dată când pătrundeam în unica şi înfricoşătoarea lume pe care Bradbury a creat-o, cu carnavale demonice sosind târziu în noapte şi personaje întunecate pe care n-o să le uit curând.

#2 Circul Nopţii – Erin Morgenstern

Iubesc această carte. La fel ca prima carte de pe această listă, şi în aceasta întâlnim un Circ ajungând târziu în noapte, dar aici se termină toate similarităţile. Pentru că această carte n-a fost ca nimic din ceea ce am citit înainte.

Unii se poate s-o găsească plictisitoare, pentru că autoarea pune mult accent pe detaliile lumii pe care o crează, dar exact asta am iubit eu la carte. Faptul că decorul era atât de detaliat, încât chiar mă simţeam de parcă aş fi fost acolo. Chiar se simţea ca magia.

Personal, am citit-o de două ori şi nu am ratat nicio şansă să recomand această poveste oricui mă asculta.

#3 Coraline – Neil Gaiman
Cărţile lui Neil Gaiman vor apărea de multe ori în acest articol, pentru că el pur si simplu scrie frumoase şi înfricoşătoare cărţi, Coraline fiind una dintre ele. Este unul dintre primele titluri care îmi vin în minte când mă gândesc la Halloween. Este ceva în legătură cu această înfricoşătoare poveste a unei fete care ajunge într-o dimensiune diferită şi o găseşte pe Cealaltă Mamă acolo ce mă face să o iau de fiecare dată când se apropie luna Octombrie.

De asemenea, ca un fapt divers: am dăruit această carte fratelui şi surorii mele – aveau 11 ani pe atunci, cred – şi a fost una dintre cele două cărţi pe care s-au bătut, pentru că voiau amândoi să o citească. Adică s-au bătut cu adevărat, cu pumni şi toate cele. Şi dacă acest lucru nu vă convinge că această carte merită citită, nu ştiu ce altceva ar putea.

#4 Seria Harry Potter – J. K. Rowling
Lista aceasta nu ar fi putut fi completă fără seria mea favorită din toate timpurile. Nu cred că trebuie să explic de ce această carte a ajuns aici.

#5 Pulbere de Stele – Neil Gaiman
Aceasta e cartea ea favorită a lui Gaiman şi de asemenea unul dintre romanele din topul preferatelor mele. Seamănă cu un basm, doar că este mai mult decât pare. Conţine un băiat care ajunge un bărbat, steaua care se îndrăgosteşte de el şi el de ea, care este de asemenea unul dintre cele mai amuzante pesonaje pe care le-am întâlnit vreodată, nişte vrăjitoare care vor să-i mănânce inima – ştiţi voi, doar chestiile obişnuite – un om păros, un unicorn şi lista poate continua.

#6 Carrie – Stephen King
Aceasta nu putea fi o listă a lecturilor de Halloween, fără a conţine măcar un titlu de Stephen King. Acesta a fost singura carte pe care am citit-o – în afară de „Pistolarul”, care este puţin cam greuţă ca să începem cu ea – şi am crezut că se potriveşte perfect. Adică, ce poate fi mai potrivit ca o poveste despre cum telekinezia poate să meargă prost?

#7 Oceanul de la capătul aleii – Neil Gaiman
Am vrut să închei această listă cu – aţi ghicit – încă un roman de Neil Gaiman. Acesta a fost puţin pe partea tristă a lucrurilor, cu un bărbat în toată firea întorcându-se la casa copilăriei sale singuratice şi rememorând ce s-a întâmplat acolo, cuprinzând universuri paralele, întâmplări ciudate – la un moment dat, mă gândeam „Ce se întâmplă???” – şi un iaz la capătul aleii, care este de fapt, un Ocean.

„Children of Blood and Bone”/ „Urmaşii de sânge şi os” by Tomi Adeyemi

English:

 This novel is written in 3 points of view: of Zelie, the daughter of a now dead maji and of Amari and Inan, the princess and the prince, children of the man who ordered the killing of Zelie’s mother 11 years before.

The setting is Orisha, a land where, before, magic was a common thing. The people chosen by the gods to do magic were born with white hair. When they reached the age of 13, they became majis and could learn to control the powers given by one of the 10 gods.

But, 11 years ago, magic dissappeared. And, in that same night, the king ordered the death of all the majis.

Now, Zelie has the chance to bring it back and, with the aid of her brother, Tzain, and Amari, she goes in a quest to bring magic back or, if they do not succeed, loose it for good…

Every year, there is at least one book everyone talks about it. A book with the hype surrounding it so huge it becomes bigger than the book could ever be. That’s why, when dealing with those kind of books, I am always a little nervous.

The hype surrounding this book was huge and it began long before it was published. Even before the first ARCs were sent, everyone was already talking about it. And when I saw that the movie rights were sold half year before the release, I decided that I should read it, no matter what.

I have got the time to read it only in July, even though I’ve had it since the beginning of June. My exams wouldn’t allow me to concentrate on something else. I’m glad I’ve waited, because I can’t remember the last time I came across a book that made me obsess over it. It happened a lot some years ago, but not lately.

I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN.

I can’t even start to say how much I loved this book and how much it impressed me. If this is her debut novel, I can’t wait to see how her writing will evolve, being so dam good already. And the message of the book. The words, they seemed so powerfull at times I felt my hair starting to stand up. How all that happened seemed so actual, even though the setting was a fictional world, where magic existed. It was something I won’t forget soon.

I had a lot of favourite characters, as it often happens when I come around good books. Of course I became fond of Zelie from the very start, but Amari was quite a surprise. I wouldn’t have expected to grow so attached to her character. And I loved how she evolved, gaining more and more trust in her own powers.

Another favourite character was Zelie’s mother. I would have loved to read more about her. Maybe, in the future, the author will come back to her character in a short story or novella? I like to think this will happen (please, please, please).

Now that I have read the book, I don’t know what to do with the time left until the 2nd book comes out (just kidding, med school will take care of all that spare time). Be sure I’ll be the first one to go to the bookstore on the day they’ll receive it.

Acest roman este scris din trei puncte de vedere: al lui Zelie, fiica unui maji acum mort şi al lui Amari şi al lui Inan, prinţesa şi prinţul, copiii omului care a ordonat omorârea mamei lui Zelie, în urmă cu 11 ani.

Cadrul este Orisha, un tărâm unde, înainte, magia era un lucru obişnuit. Oamenii aleşi de zei să aibă puteri magice erau născuţi cu părul alb. Când ajungeau la vârsta de 13 ani, ei deveneau maji şi puteau să înveţe cum să-şi controleze puterile date de unul dintre cei 10 zei.

Dar, în urmă cu 11 ani, magia a dispărut. Şi, în aceeaşi noapte, regele a ordonat uciderea tuturor majilor.

Acum, Zelie are şansa de a o aduce înapoi şi, cu ajutorul fratelui său, Tzain şi a lui Amari, ea pleacă într-o misiune de a aduce înapoi magia şi, dacă nu sunt victorioşi, de a o pierde pentru totdeauna…

 

În fiecare an, există cel puţin o carte despre care vorbeşte toată lumea. O carte cu hype-ul din jurul ei atât de mare, încât devine mai mare decât ar putea fi cartea vreodată. De aceea, atunci când mă confrunt cu acele cărţi, am mereu ceva emoţii.

Hype-ul care înconjura această carte era atât de mare încât a început încă de dinaine ca aceasta să fie publicată. Chiar înainte să apară primele ARC-uri, toată lumea vorbea deja despre ea. Şi când am văzut că drepturile pentru adaptarea cinematografică fuseseră deja cumpărate cu jumătate de an înaintea publicării, am decis că trebuia neapărat să o citesc.

Am avu timp să citesc cartea abia în iulie, chiar dacă o avusesem de la începutul lunii iunie. Examenele nu mi-au permis să mă concentrez pe altceva. Mă bucur că am aşteptat, pentru că nu îmi pot aminti ultima dată când m-am confruntat cu o carte care să mă facă să devin obsedată. Mi se întâmpla des înainte, dar nu în ultimul timp.

NU AM PUTUT SĂ O LAS DIN MÂNĂ.

Nici nu pot să încep să spun cât de mult am iubit şi m-a impresionat această carte. Dacă acesta este romanul ei de debut, abia aştept să văd cum va evolua felul ei de a scrie, fiind deja atât de bun. Şi mesajul cărţii. Cuvintele, ele au părut atât de puternice încăt, în unele părţi, mi-am simţit firele de păr ridicându-se. Cum toate întâmplările mi s-au părut atât de actuale, chiar dacă erau într-un cadru ficţional, unde magia exista. A fost ceva ce n-am să uit curând.

Am avut multe personaje favorite, cum mi se întâmplă deseori, atunci când dau de cărţi bune. Desigur că m-am ataşat de Zelie de la început, dar cu Amari a fost o adevărată surpriză. Nu m-aş fi aşteptat să devin aşa de ataşată de personajul ei. Şi am iubit felul în care ea a evoluat, dobândind din ce în ce mai multă încredere în propriile sale puteri.

Un alt personaj favorit a fost mama lui Zelie. Mi-ar fi plăcut să citesc mai multe despre ea. Poate, în viitor, autoarea se va întoarce la personajul ei într-o povestire sau o nuvelă? Mi-ar place să cred că se va întâmpla(te rog, te rog, te rog).

Acum, că am citit carte, nu ştiu ce să fac cu timpul rămas până când apare cel de-al doilea volum. Puteţi să fiţi siguri că voi fi prima care va merge la librărie în ziua în care îl vor primi.

Cartea a apărut de curând la Editura Epica.

 

„The Ballad of the Sad Cafe”/ „Balada tristei cafenele” by Carson McCullers

*review written as soon as I finished reading the book, but published now because I was just too lazy*

4.71* – because I’m THAT specific. It’s just that, from the 7 stories in this collection, not all of them were a full 5*. Hence the rating.

I’ve spent the first 5 days of my summer holiday (having taken the last exam on the 4th of July and now being the 9th) reading Carson McCullers’s works. First it was the weirdly beautiful novel that is „The Member of the Wedding” and now the short story collection „The Ballad of the Sad Cafe”. And, fortunatelly – because I had my fears – I wasn’t let down by the short stories. They were good (not all of them 5-stars good, but close enough) and I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed reading a short story collection as much as I did now. Because, thruth be said, I’m not a big fan of short stories. With some exceptions (F. S. Fitzgerald, Jack London and Ray Bradbury), I never read them. But I’m glad I did now.

By far my favourite was the novella „The Ballad of the Sad Cafe”. It was the longest and, because of that, the author could work her magic better. Not that the other short stories weren’t good. But, with only 10-20 pages, one cannot give enough details and, in some cases, I felt that there could be more to them.

4,71* – pentru ca îmi place să fiu ATÂT de specifică. Este doar faptul că, din cele 7 povestiri din această colecţie, nu toate meritau 5*. De aici notarea.

Am petrecut primele 5 zile ale vacanţei mele de vară (având ultimul examen pe 4 iulie şi acum fiind 9 iulie) citind cărţile lui Carson McCullers. Mai întâi a fost ciudat de frumosul roman „În acea vară verde” şi acum colecţia de povestiri „Balada tristei cafenele”. Şi, din fericire – pentru că am avut reţinerile mele – nu am fost dezamăgită de povestiri. Au fost bune (nu toate de 5*, dar destul de aproape) şi nu pot să îmi amintesc ultima dată când mi-a plăcut atât de mult să citesc o colecţie de povestiri cât mi-a plăcut acum. Pentru că, să fiu sinceră acum, nu sunt un mare fan al lor. Cu câteva excepţii (F.S. Fitzgerald, Jack London si Ray Bradbury), nu le citesc niciodată. Ma bucur că am făcut-o acum.

Pe departe favorita mea a fost nuvela „Balada tristei cafenele”. A fost cea mai lungă şi, din cauza aceasta, autoarea a reuşit să-şi exercite magia mai bine. Nu că şi celelalte povestiri nu au fost bune. Dar, cu doar 10-20 de pagini, nu poţi da destule detalii şi, în unele cazuri, am simţit că puteau fi mai mult.

“The Member of the Wedding”/ “În vara aceea verde” by Carson McCullers (Rating: 5*)

English:

This novel follows Frankie Addams (or F. Jasmine, as she likes to call herself), a 12 years old girl, as she goes through an existential crisis, realizing that she has grown up, unlike the “old” Frankie. Her brother’s wedding triggers her desire to leave for good her small Southern town and, even though her plans don’t come true, she becomes more mature, a whole new girl.

Alongside the main character, there are other unforgettable figures in this novel: John Henry, Frankie’s 6 years old cousin, Berenice, the black woman that cooked for the girl and her father and looked after them.

With this novel, I became sure of several things: first of all, Carson McCullers can’t write a bad book and second, she is now one of my all-time favourite authors. I can even say I put her on the same level with Harper Lee and Truman Capote. So yeah, I love her writing a great deal.

After reading the beautiful piece of art that is “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, I was a little afraid to dive into her other works. What if that novel was just a “one-time” thing? What if, after being so enthusiastic about reading it I won’t be able to dive in and enjoy my read? It took me 2 months to pick it up, with exams blocking my free way to it, but I’m glad I chose this one to start the summer. Because what better way to start off a great summer is but a 5* book?

Acest roman urmăreşte povestea lui Frankie Addams (sau F. Jasmine, cum îi place să îşi spună), o fată de 12 ani, cât timp trece printr-o criză existenţială, atunci când realizează că a crescut, spre deosebire de „vechea” Frankie. Nunta fratelui său declanşează dorinţa ei de a lăsa în urmă pentru totdeauna orăşelul ei Sudist şi, chiar dacă planul ei nu se împlineşte, ea devine mai matură, o cu totul alta.

Pe lângă personajul principal, există şi alte personaje memorabile: John Henry, verişorul de 6 ani al lui Frankie, Berenice, femeia de culoare care gătea pentru fată şi pentru tatăl ei şi care avea grijă de ei.

Cu acest roman, am devenit sigură de mai multe lucruri: în primul rând, Carson McCullers nu poate scrie un roman prost şi, în al doilea rând, ea este acum unul dintre autorii mei favoriţi din toate timpurile. Pot chiar spune că o pun pe acelaşi nivel cu Harper Lee şi cu Truman Capote. Deci da, îmi place destul de mult felul ei de a scrie.

Dupa ce am citit acea frumoasa piesa de arta care este „Inima-i un vânător singuratic”, mi-a fost puţin frică să încep să citesc şi celelalte lucrări ale sale. Daca acel roman a fost doar ceva de „o singură dată”? Dacă, după ce am fost atât de entuziasmată la gandul ca voi citi cartea, nu voi fi în stare să patrund in lumea ei şi să mă bucur de lectură? Mi-au trebuit 2 luni ca să îmi fac curaj să o iau de pe raft, cu examene blocandu-mi liberul access catre ea, dar mă bucur că am ales acest roman ca să îmi încep vara.Căci ce alt mod mai bun de a începe o vară grozavă există în afară de a citi o carte de 5*?

„The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender” / „Straniile şi minunatele amărăciuni ale Avei Lavender” by Leslye Walton (Rating: 5*)

For decades, the members of the Roux family have suffered from love. It even seemed that the way they madly fell in love was a trait of their family. Ava Lavender, the youngest of this family, is the one who tells the story of the Roux women and men, in an attempt to understand why she was different from the others. Because Ava, unlike her brother, who was perfectly normal at birth, was born with wings. And her attempt to fit into a society that does not understand her uncovers the story of her not so usual family members.

It took me 3 days to get past the first 50-60 pages of this book. Not because I didn’t like it, but because I didn’t have the time to read it. Going on a road trip with your family doesn’t leave time for anything else. When I got home(and finished with everything else), it took me one day to get through the rest of it. And I loved every minute.

I have been seing this book a lot, reccomended by booktubers. In the past several months, I kept hearing it being mentioned at least once a week. So of course when I saw it in my favourite bookstore, I didn’t miss the chance to actually own and read it. And yet it took me a month to get to action.

This book was just so lyrical. It caught my attention from the very first page and kept it throughot the story. It was unique. And unforgettable, not because of what happens at the end(even though that was shocking, seing it coming or not). Because I loved all the characters and felt connected to them. Because I can swear this book smelled like croissants and hot bread. And because this is one of the few books to have risen to its hype.

De zeci de ani, membrii familiei Roux au suferit din iubire. Chiar a părut că felul în care se îndrăgosteau nebuneşte era o trăsătură a familiei lor. Ava Lavender, cea mai tânără din această familie, este cea care spune povestea bărbaţilor şi femeilor Roux, într-o încercare de a înţelege de ce ea a fost diferită de ceilalţi. Pentru că Ava, spre deosebire de fratele său, care a fost perfect normal la naştere, s-a născut cu aripi. Şi încercarea ei de a se integra într-o societate care n-o înţelege dezvăluie povestea nu atât de obişnuiţilor membri ai familiei sale.

Mi-au trebuit 3 zile ca să trec de primele 50-60 de pagini ale acestei cărţi. Nu pentru că nu mi-a plăcut, ci pentru că nu am avut timp să o citesc. A merge într-o excursie cu ai tăi nu-ţi lasă prea mult timp pentru altceva. Când am ajuns acasă (şi am terminat tot ceea ce mai aveam de făcut), mi-a trebuit o zi să citesc tot restul cărţii. Şi am iubit fiecare minut.

Am văzut foarte des romanul acesta, recomandat de booktuberi. În ultimele câteva luni, l-am tot auzit menţionat de cel puţin o dată pe săptămână. Aşa că desigur că atunci când l-am văzut în librăria mea favorită, n-am ratat şansă să îl am şi să îl citesc. Şi totuşi mi-a luat o luna să trec propriu-zis la fapte.

Cartea aceasta a fost atat de lirica. Mi-a prins atenţia încă de la prima pagină şi mi-a păstrat-o tot timpul povestirii. A fost unică. Si de neuitat, nu pentru ceea ce se întâmplă la sfârşit (chiar daca a FOST şocant, anticipând sau nu ceea ce urma să se întâmple). Pentru că am iubit toate personajele şi m-am simţit conectată cu ele. Pentru că pot să jur că această carte mirosea a croissante si a pâine caldă. Şi pentru că a fost una dintre puţinele cărţi care s-au ridicat la nivelul aşteptărilor.

„Prince of Thorns” / „Prinţul spinilor” by Mark Lawrence (Rating: 5*)

English:

Jorg Ancrath was raised as the heir to his father’s throne and had a wonderfull childhood alongside his little brother Will and his loving mother. But all that is lost when, at 9 years old, his mother and brother are brutally murdered in front of him and he escapes just out of luck. 4 years later, he is now the Prince of Thorns, a brutal leader of brutal men, whose goals in life are:1)to avenge his family’s death and 2)to become a King by the age of 15.

Before I start this, let me just say: this is not my normal read. The books I usually read are not this bloody and brutal. And this one made in some parts „Game of Thrones” look like a children’s story. So, if you decide to buy this book just because you saw me rating it so high and think it’s just another fantasy, with a likable hero who does heroic stuff, don’t even bother picking it up. Because Jorg is not your tipycal hero. He’s not even a „hero”. And I loved him for it.

I wanted to start this one a while ago. I’ve had it on my shelf ever since I was in 12th grade(and now I’m in second year of college) and, for some reason, never picked it up. I tried about a year ago and was horrified at the sight of the scene in the first page(description being too graphic).  It was too bloody and violent for my taste. And maybe med school worked its „magic” on me, because this time, when I picked it up, I couldn’t possibly put it down. And the best part is that it finally got me out of my fantasy reading slump! Hooray for me! And for Mark Lawrence, for writing such a good novel!

To return to the book, I don’t ever think I have loved a „bad guy”(because our protagonist can’t be called a „hero”) more than I loved Jorg. I mean yes, the guy would sacrifice anything and anyone to get what he wants and yes he would kill me wothout giving it a second thought, only because he found me annoying, but still, he is one of the best fantasy characters I have ever had the pleasure to encounter.

I know people will consider him disgusting and hate his guts, but I still believe he is one of the best things in this book. The other best thing was how the plot seemed to fall into place. Like how carefull was the author in giving little hints now and then and, at the end, how everything turned out to be. I myself was so shocked at some revealing that I had to take a break and stare at the ceiling for some good minutes before I could take all that in.

So yes, I can say that I loved this book and that I can’t wait for the next one to be translated in my language(for the sake of having them all in one language, a thing I always do). I really hope it will be at least as good as this one.

Jorg Ancrath a fost crescut ca moştenitorul tronului tatălui său şi a avut o minunată copilărie alături de fratele său mai mic, Will şi de mama sa iubitoare. Dar pierde toate acestea când, la 9 ani, mama şi fratele mai mic sunt ucişi cu brutalitate în faţa sa şi el scapă doar dintr-un pur noroc. Patru ani mai târziu, el este acum Prinţul Spinilor, un lider brutal al unor oameni brutali, ale cărui ţeluri în viaţă sunt: 1. Să răzbune moartea familie sale şi 2. Să ajungă rege până la vârsta de 15 ani.

Înainte să încep această recenzie, trebuie să spun doar: aceasta nu este una dintre lecturile mele obişnuite. Cărţile pe care le citesc de obicei nu sunt atât de sângeroase şi de violente. Şi aceasta a făcut în unele părţi ca „Urzeala Tronurilor” să pară doar o poveste de adormit copiii. Deci, dacă decideţi să cumpăraţi această carte doar pentru că m-aţi văzut dându-i o notă atât de mare pe Goodreads şi credeţi că e doar un alt fantasy cu un erou uşor de plăcut care face chestii eroice, nici nu va deranjaţi să o luaţi. Pentru că Jorg nu este eroul vostru obişnuit. Nu este nici măcar un „erou”. Şi l-am iubit pentru asta.

Am vrut să încep aceasta carte acum ceva timp. Am avut-o pe raft încă din clasa a 12-a (acum fiind în anul doi de facultate) şi, pentru diferite motive, nu am început-o niciodată. Am încercat-o aproape acum un an şi am fost oripilată de scena din prima pagină (descrierea fiind prea grafică). Era prea sângeroasă şi prea violentă pentru gustul meu. Şi poate că facultatea de medicină şi-a lucrat „magia” pe mine, dar de data aceasta, când am luat-o de pe raft şi am început s-o citesc, nu am putut s-o mai las din mâini. Şi partea cea mai bună este că în sfârşit m-a scos din reading slump-ul pentru cărţi fantasy! Ura pentru mine! şi pentru Mark Lawrence, pentru că a scris un roman atât de bun!

Ca să mă întorc la carte, nu cred că am mai iubit vreodată un personaj negativ (pentru că protagonistul nostru nu se poate numi „erou”) atât cât l-am iubit pe Jorg. Adică da, tipul ar sacrifica pe oricine şi orice ca să obţină ceea ce vrea şi da, m-ar ucide fără să aibă resentimente, doar pentru că m-a găsit enervantă dar totuşi, el este unul dintre cele mai bune personaje fantasy pe care am avut vreodata plăcerea să le întâlnesc.

Ştiu că oamenii îl vor considera dezgustător şi îl vor urî din tot sufletul, dar tot cred că este unul dintre cele mai bune lucruri din cartea asta. Celălalt a fost cum toată acţiunea a părut să se asambleze, cât de atent a fost autorul în a da mici indicii din când în când şi cum a ieşit totul. Personal am fost atât de şocată din cauza unei dezvăluiri că am avut nevoie de o pauză şi m-am holbat la tavan câteva minute bune, până când am putut să accept tot ceea ce se întâmplase.

Deci da, pot spune că am iubit această carte şi că abia aştept ca următorul volum să fie tradus la noi (pentru a avea toate voluele într-o singură limbă, o chestie pe care o fac mereu). Chiar sper să fie măcar la fel de bun ca acesta.

 

Cartea a fost iniţial tradusă de către Editura Trei. De curând, seria a fost reluată de către Editura Nemira.

„Anne of Avonlea” by L.M. Montgomery(Rating: 5*)

English:

In this second installment of the „Anne of Green Gables” series, Anne, now half-past sixteen, has to take up on the task of being a teacher at her old school. More mature, but as romantic as ever, she wants to improve the way her students should be educated and is soon loved by all of them(even though there were some difficulties at first).

Even though she is changed and not at all the young girl that arrived at Green Gables some years before, trouble still finds her, even when she only means well.

What I loved about this book – and, in general, about this series – is that it brought me joy. I was feeling down and have felt like that for the past several weeks and this book managed to shake the sensation a little bit.

Some may say that it wasn’t as good as the first one. That it was boring. Yes, I have to admit that it was sometimes slow, but what can be fast-paced about day-to-day life? And I didn’t need a book better than the first, just a volume in which, between the pages, I can find my beloved characters.

I loved seeing Anne grow. I loved laughing at her unwanted mistakes and how reading the book seemed almost impossible during my subway trips, because I wanted to giggle. I loved seeing how her relationship with Gilbert(who, by the way, could have been more present) slowly turns into something more.

În această a doua carte a seriei „Anne of Green Gables”, Anne, acum de şaisprezece ani si jumătate, trebuie să se confrunte cu provocarea de a fi profesoară la vechea ei şcoala. Mai matură, dar la fel de romantică, ea vrea să îmbunătăţească modul in care elevii ei sunt educaţi şi este în curând iubită de toţi (chiar dacă au existat ceva dificultăţi la început).

Chiar dacă s-a schimbat şi nu mai este deloc tânăra fată care a ajuns la Green Gables cu câţiva ani inainte, tot reuşeşte să intre în încurcături, chiar şi atunci când doreşte doar să facă bine.

Ce iubesc la această carte – şi la serie, în general – este că îmi aduce bucurie. Mă simţeam abătută şi mă simţisem aşa în ultimele câteva săptămâni şi cartea aceasta a reuşit să îmi scuture senzaţia puţin.

Unii ar spune că nu este la fel de bună ca prima. Că a fost plictisitoare. Da, trebuie să recunosc faptul ca a fost câteodată înceată, dar ce poate fi foarte alert la viaţa de zi cu zi? Şi nu am avut nevoie de o carte mai buna decat prima, doar un volum în care, printre paginile lui, să regăsesc preaiubitele mele personaje.

Am iubit să o văd pe Anne crescând. Am iubit să râd de greşelile ei nedorite şi cum cititul în metrou a fost aproape imposibil, pentru că voiam sa chicotesc. Am iubit să văd cum relaţia ei cu Gilbert – care, apropo, ar fi putut fi putin mai prezent – se transformă încetul cu încetul în ceva diferit.
